October 13th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Sports

Selecting the perfect mountain bike can be a daunting process for anyone especially with all the styles that are available. While it can be confusing at first, the whole selection process can be made easier if you ask yourself some crucial questions. What am I looking for in a bike? What do I need it for? Can I afford it?

After you have the queries rolling in your mind, you must then think of what will you be doing with the bike. The purpose of getting a mountain bike is critical to the selection process. If you plan to take your bike to rocky trails and jump off ledges, then you require a bike that sports a full-suspension system as well the latest and the best mountain bike components.

Of course, you need to be daring. But what if you want a bike that you can just take on a date or go on some downhill tour with friends? The best item for this scenario is the hybrid bike. This baby can perform extremely well whether off-road or on the city streets.

Budget is also an issue. If you prefer low-priced mountain bikes, there are still some that could suit your finances. However, these low end mountain bikes do not come with the best of features. Most of them are rigged with hard tails with no suspension. They may not be as comfortable as expensive bikes are, but they can get the job done – take you from Point A to Point B.

But the best tip in the world when it comes to mountain bikes is that pick one the suits you the best. See, buying a mountain bike is like picking a pair of sneakers. If you dont feel the shoes, you dont buy it. The same principle applies to mountain bikes.

There are mountain bikes that cost around $50,000 and these bikes are assembled with the best in mountain bike components, from the brake system to the suspension. However, if your instinct tells you this is not the bike for you, then do not make the purchase even if you can afford it and look for another model. Sometimes it is wise that you let your instinct guide you when making these kind of choices.

If you want some professional touch to help you out, then head down to the local bike shop in your area. There you can ask the people for some advice and tips that will help you pick the perfect bike for you. Of course, you can always tweak your bike if there are some modifications you want done.

Surgical Technicians Are Often Overlooked as One of the Best Health Care Professions

October 13th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Reference and Education

The economy has been taking a downward dump seemingly for the last couple of years. However there seems to always be a steady demand for healthcare professionals. There are many different fields that can be considered when deciding to make medicine the field you are looking to enter.

People choose to be Registered Nurses, Xray Technicians, Nursing Assistants, to doctors. However one of the professions that people simply do not know about is the surgical technician.

Surgical Technicians are medical professionals that are in charge of assisting the surgeons during a procedure. Their responsibilities during a procedure include sterilizing the surgical area, and keeping it sterilized. They also are in charge of sterilizing the tools that are used during the operation and being well versed in their usage and functions. During the procedure a surgical technician is in charge of handing the surgeon each and every tool they ask for. Whether it be the scalpel, the clamps, or suction, the surgical technician needs to be ready to hand the tool to the surgeon quickly. They tend to have added responsibilities depending on which surgeon they are assisting but for the most part those are their main responsibilities.

One of the best things about becoming a surgical technician is how easy it is to become certified. The schooling itself only takes a year, and the only pre requisite for the school is a basic anatomy and physiology class. The schooling tends to not even be very intense, mostly it focuses on proper sterilization techniques, learning all of the surgical tools and how they are used, and lastly a fair amount of clinical hours.

What really surprises people is how much surgical technicians make. Often times they start out at around eighteen to twenty dollars an hour. However the surgical technician makes most of his or her money by being on call. The surgical Technician is paid for every hour they are on call ina given week. And they can easily be on call for an entire week straight. This means that 24/7 a surgical technician is getting paid for his or her time.

That may not seem like a lot of money, however, being paid 24/7 for weeks or months quickly adds up to a very large sum. It is quite common for surgical technicians to clear $80,000 a year.

While surgical technicians are on call they are required to be 20 minutes away from the facility, or a certain amount of miles from their work place. While they are on call they get to hang out at home, watch TV, run an at home business, play golf, you name it they can do it. And they get paid for each enjoyable hour.

One of my esteemed surgical technician colleagues was saying that last week he was on call for the entire seven days and was called into work once. He was paid for almost 350 hours of work but hadn’t come into work for 6 of those 7 days.

The career of Surgical Technicians is often not referenced when deciding which medical profession to go into. However it is quite simply one of the most laid back and rewarding careers a person can choose for themselves.
